The word Muladhara breaks down into two Sanskrit words: Mula meaning “root” and Adhara, which means “support” or “base.”

Muladhara is the most instinctual of all chakras – it is your survival center. Your fight and flight response is initiated from this chakra. This is your primal, animal nature.

Root Chakra is energy center of protection, grounding, trust, power, security and stability.

Root chakra and is based on the earth element. Sitting at the base of the spine it lays our foundations and is associated with feelings of safety and grounding. The root chakra is the centre of manifestation and is powerfully related to Mother Earth. If this chakra is blocked we may feel fearful, anxious, insecure and frustrated and problems in our hips, legs, lower back and sexual organs can occur.

When there is an imbalance in the root chakra, you may experience fear, feelings of lack or poverty, disconnection, anxiety and greed. Physical imbalances may manifest as lower back pain (feeling unsupported), elimination issues (holding on) and stiffness in legs, knees or feet (fear of moving forward). Hoarding and eating disorders (control) are signs of an imbalanced root chakra.
